Summary
GFL Environmental is focused on reducing, reusing, recycling, recovering, and maximizing value from industrial waste with customers in a broad range of industry sectors. At the North Vancouver Refinery, we specialize specifically in oil recycling.
Reporting to the Operation Supervisor, the Operator is accountable for day-to-day operations of process units and its ancillaries at North Vancouver Oil Refinery.
The work schedule for the first six months will be 7:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. The schedule will then transition to a rotating schedule, 2 days than 2 nights, then 5 days off. Hours of work will be 7:00am to 7:00pm (days) and 7:00pm to 7:00am (nights).
Key Accountabilities
- Ensure that all units are operated to GFL standards and in accordance with all government regulations.
- Operate, monitor and control process levels, temperatures, pressures and flows for applicable utilities, processes and systems in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ensure that the required documentation is legible, accurate and completed on a timely basis.
- Use technical expertise to assist process operations in the optimization of all units and equipment.
- Identify and recommend improvements to processes and systems.
- Perform emergency operation activities as needed.
- Regularly attend safety meetings, identifies any safety concerns to the supervisor, report all incidents and assist in investigations.
- Perform mechanical and or equipment maintenance as required and/or assigned.
- Maintain safe and clean equipment and general work area.
- Train on unfamiliar processes and equipment, within established guidelines and procedures, as required.
- Acquire and maintain adequate certification as required.
- Provide guidance, direction and technical expertise to less experienced operators.
Experience, Qualifications & Education
- A minimum of 5 years petroleum refinery related experience
- A strong understanding of oil distillation and / or hydrotreating
- Must be a current holder of BC or Inter-provincial minimum 4th Class Power Engineering certificate.
- Able to work various shifts as shifts can rotate, have extended and overtime hours. Plant operates 24/7.

- Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong team player with the ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform physical and labour-intensive tasks.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
