The Indigenous Zero Waste Technical Advisory Group (IZWTAG) has established a strong network of Indigenous technical leaders focused on developing their community’s solid waste management systems. These leaders and their communities co-ordinate with federal and provincial bodies as well as regional districts and municipalities to develop strategies to improve solid waste management for British Columbia. Working with a technical advisory group compromised of experts from recycling stewardship organizations, regional districts, and Indigenous Services Canada, IZWTAG assists First Nations implement zero waste programs.
The Circuit Rider is a solid waste management expert that travels between a group of communities with the intent to assess, educate, report, and support these communities. The Circuit Rider will collaborate with solid waste management operators and administrators for each of these communities to improve their system.
The Circuit Rider will be supervised and guided by the Program Manager and Indigenous Services Canada contact. The Circuit Rider will be required to report all activities to the Program Manager, and each First Nation’s solid waste management administration.
The Circuit Rider position responsibilities involve the following:
- Review the IZWTAG Operating Standards document and Circuit Rider manual highlighting criteria and support for the position.
- Review of each of the solid waste management systems for each community in the circuit.
- Discuss scheduling with each community’s administration and prepare for community engagement.
- Conduct a site visit for each community, complete with overall solid waste management system review and assessment.
- Develop an operations and maintenance training plan for each community with the aid of supporting documents.
- Conduct on-site training for community solid waste management operators.
- Provide updates to the Program Manager throughout the Program.
- Complete a final report of each community to be submitted to the community’s administration, the Program Manager, and the Indigenous Services Canada contact.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience working with First Nation communities and has a familiarity, understanding, and respect for the cultures and peoples within communities involved with this Program.
- Must be willing and eligible to work as an independent contractor.
- 5+ years of experience in the solid waste management industry, public works positions, or related fields.
- Demonstrated experience in facilitating community engagements or in organizing and running an educational workshop.
- Experience working with, operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting mechanical equipment is considered an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with driving record in good standing.
- Willingness and ability to travel to isolated and interior regions of British Columbia.
- Basic understanding of MS Office, Word, Excel.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and abilities.
- A strong understanding of zero-waste philosophy and practices is considered an asset.
