Tetra Tech Canada Inc. is seeking individuals who are excited about waste diversion and reduction! We are looking for Waste Sorters to help characterize garbage, recycling, and organics from households and/or commercial properties in the Lower Mainland, BC (eg., Surrey, Burnaby, and/or Abbotsford). Waste Sorters will assist with collecting samples from various sources and sorting waste samples into identified categories. The categories are individually weighed and recorded. An orientation session and health and safety training will be provided.

 

This is a short-term (temporary) hourly position requiring approximately 40 hours of work per week from October 28 to November 30, 2024 (Monday through Friday with potential of Saturday work). These are tentative dates and may incur minor adjustments. Sorters will be paid $24/hr for the work, including training that will take place a week prior to the sorting dates.

 

There is a potential of renewal for other projects across Western Canada. If you have not done a waste composition study before, please review this video to get a sense of the work involved.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Physically collecting and sorting through selected waste samples into several individual categories.
  • Sample weighing, data entry, recording observations, and taking photographs.
  • Potential interaction with residents to inform them of current waste management procedures.
  • Work outside in varied weather conditions, with the ability to stand, lift, bend, and twist for long periods of time.

 

Qualifications:

  • Be able to provide their own transportation to work sites in Burnaby and Surrey, BC. Some sites may be accessible by public transit.
  • Own CSA Green Triangle certified steel-toed boots (minimum 6” ankle height) or be able to acquire them before your first day; other personal protective equipment will be provided (e.g., mask, high-vis vest, and safety glasses).
  • Experience doing physical labor in variable weather conditions and able to perform regular lifting safely (up to a maximum of 25 kg or 50 lbs) over the course of a workday.
  • An understanding of and interest in current environmental and waste management issues.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, practicing safe work methods.
  • Excellent attention to detail, and ability to work accurately and quickly to meet deadlines.
  • Be punctual and able to start work early in the morning (7 am).
  • Willingness to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
  • Experience with waste composition studies and audits, environmental data collection, and/or other types of solid waste management work would be an asset.
